Simon Loretz

Simon Loretz is a Senior Economist at the Österreichisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (WIFO), specializing in international taxation, tax competition, and public finance. He joined WIFO in 2017 and leads key projects for the European Commission, including framework contracts for taxation analysis. Previously, he held roles at the Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Bayreuth (academic council member), and Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation (research fellow). His research focuses on tax policy, fiscal federalism, and microeconometric applications.

Education: Doctorate from University of Innsbruck and habilitation from University of Bayreuth. He actively participates in applied research projects and coordinates EU-funded initiatives such as the 2024-2028 Taxation Analysis Framework Contract.

Recent activities include presenting on backward-looking tax rate methodologies at Brussels and Munich events, emphasizing harmonized tax policy frameworks. His work bridges academic research with practical policy analysis, particularly in European integration contexts.
