Simon Lightfoot

Professor Simon Lightfoot is a Professor of Politics at the University of Leeds' School of Politics and International Studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He joined in 2005 and was promoted to full professor in 2019. His expertise spans Development Aid Policy, EU Politics, and Innovations in Teaching and Learning. He currently supervises PhD students at the Australian National University, Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania), and the University of Passau (Germany).

Professor Lightfoot has held visiting roles at the University of Ljubljana, the National Europe Centre (Australian National University), and Corvinus University of Budapest. He co-convenes the EADI Working Group 'The EU as a Development Actor' and focuses on development aid policy in the UK, Central and Eastern Europe, and EU climate change initiatives. His teaching achievements include the Political Studies Association's Bernard Crick Prize (2009) and the prestigious National Teaching Fellow award (2013).

His research explores UK development policy reframing, post-EU accession dynamics in CEE, and the EU's evolving development role. He emphasizes pedagogical innovations like hyflex teaching and policy brief assessments to enhance employability in political science education. Professional memberships include UACES, PSA, and ECPR.

Recent scholarship addresses post-pandemic education models, EU-Africa environmental cooperation, and the implications of UK aid architecture reforms. His work bridges academic research with practical policy analysis, reflecting a commitment to both scholarly rigor and real-world impact.
