Simon Klemperer is a Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in Earth and Planetary Sciences. He leads the Crustal research group within the Department of Geophysics, focusing on continental lithosphere structure, tectonics, and deformation using seismology. His work emphasizes combining geophysical and geological data to study regions like Tibet and the Himalaya, including geochemical studies of geothermal fluids. He directs the SE3 Summer Undergraduate Research program, placing over 20 students annually in geoscience research.
Education: Ph.D. in Geophysics (Cornell University, 1985), M.A. (Cambridge University, 1984), B.A. in Mineralogy and Petrology (Cambridge University, 1980).
Research interests include crust-mantle interactions, seismic imaging of continental collision zones, and the application of Sn/Lg ratio methods to identify mantle earthquakes. Recent studies address Tibetan seismicity patterns, crustal delamination, and the fate of lithosphere during continental collisions.
Publications highlight advancements in methods like virtual deep seismic sounding (VDSS) and Sn/Lg analysis, with a focus on Himalayan-Tibetan tectonics. He has contributed to understanding the structural controls of geothermal systems and the mechanics of continental rifting.
