About
Dr. Bill Menke is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. His expertise spans geophysical data analysis techniques including inverse theory and seismic tomography, with research focusing on lithospheric structure, continental accretion, and subduction zone dynamics.
His research investigates fundamental earth processes including hotspot-mid ocean ridge interactions, volcanism, crustal formation mechanisms, and mantle dynamics. Fieldwork includes seismic experiments in diverse tectonic settings from continental rifts to oceanic spreading centers.
Professor Menke has led multiple NSF-funded projects including the Gulf of Suez Lithosphere Experiment and Western Atlantic Lithosphere Experiment. He maintains active collaborations globally and develops open-source computational tools for geophysical inverse problems.
He teaches courses in geophysical inverse theory, time series analysis, and structural seismology, and has authored influential textbooks on geophysical data analysis.
