About
Simon Blakey is a Senior Fellow at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute, specializing in the European energy industry and its global dependencies, particularly the Europe-Russia natural gas relationship from 1980 to the present. With four decades of experience at the intersection of geopolitics, energy economics, and climate change, he has provided strategic advice to corporations and energy policy guidance to governments and agencies worldwide.
His career highlights include roles at S&P Global Commodities Insights (formerly Cambridge Energy Research Associates) as a Senior Adviser, five years at the International Energy Agency in Paris, and three years as Special Envoy at an industry association in Brussels. He is a co-author with Daniel Yergin (Pulitzer Prize-winning author) and Professor Thane Gustafson (Georgetown University) of landmark studies on Russian-European commercial and political dynamics, including the 2009 Russian-Ukrainian gas crisis.
At the Florence School of Transnational Governance, Blakey collaborates with colleagues to explore diverse perspectives on future global governance frameworks, including Russia’s evolving role in European and international relations. This work informs his upcoming book, which will develop plausible scenarios for Russia’s future and its relationship with Europe and the world.
