Sigmund Oehrl

Sigmund Oehrl is a researcher at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Culture at Stockholm University, where he leads the project Ancient Images 2.0: A Digital Edition of the Gotlandic Picture Stones (funded by the Swedish Research Council). He also serves as a guest lecturer at the University of Vienna and holds the title of Privatdozent (docent) in Munich since 2017.

His research bridges archaeology and philology, focusing on Iron Age and Viking art, runology, Old Norse religion, and digital archaeology. He has extensively studied human-animal relations, legal history, and Vendel/Viking Age material culture. His 15 most recent articles (6 listed here) explore topics like RTI-based reanalysis of picture stones, afterlife journeys in Gotlandic art, and raptor symbolism, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to Scandinavian prehistoric studies.
