Shunsaku Horiuchi

Shunsaku Horiuchi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the Center for Neutrino Physics and the College of Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Tokyo (2009). His research focuses on astroparticle physics, particularly supernova explosions, neutrino physics, and dark matter interactions, leveraging multi-messenger astronomy. He is a key member of the SuperNova Early Warning System (SNEWS) and has contributed to projects like Hyper-Kamiokande and DUNE.

Education: Ph.D. in Physics, University of Tokyo (2009). Previous roles include Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech (2014–2020), Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of California, Irvine, and Ohio State University.

Research interests include theoretical studies of supernova neutrinos, dark matter detection via neutrino interactions, and the application of astronomical observations to validate theoretical models. His work bridges high-energy astrophysics and particle physics, with a focus on neutrino backgrounds and their implications for cosmology.

Recent achievements include studies on the diffuse supernova neutrino background, protomagnetar outflows, and constraints on sterile neutrinos. His team includes postdocs and students like Sarah Healy and Andrew Caruso. Research is supported by NSF, DOE, and Japanese funding bodies.
