About
Alec T. Habig serves as Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Swenson College of Science and Engineering. He teaches undergraduate courses including Phys 1035 "Energy" and Phys 2015 "General Physics II" while overseeing the Physics MS program.
His research centers on Experimental Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics through major international collaborations: MINOS, NOvA, HALO, DUNE, Super-Kamiokande, and MACRO. He also participates in the Supernova Early Warning System (SNEWS/SNEWS2.0) and represents UMD in the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. Current investigations focus on neutrino oscillation parameters, speed measurements, atmospheric neutrino variations, and supernova detection methodologies.
Publication analysis reveals consistent emphasis on long-baseline neutrino experiments, cosmic ray physics, and multi-detector supernova alert systems, primarily utilizing data from underground laboratories like Soudan Mine. Key contributions include MINOS Far Detector operations, Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino studies, and SNEWS infrastructure development.
Scientific awards: No awards documented in provided materials.
As Director of Graduate Studies, he oversees Physics MS student advising and curriculum development. Research is funded by NSF grants including RUI #1607381 (MINOS) and collaborative #1505960 (SNEWS), supporting detector operations and data analysis.
He holds leadership roles at the Soudan Mine Underground Laboratory as Associate Director and contributes to international neutrino collaborations including MINOS control room operations and Super-Kamiokande detector maintenance. Current experimental focus includes DUNE development and SNEWS2.0 implementation for real-time supernova alerts.
