Shari Rabin is an Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and Religion at Oberlin College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD from Yale University (2015), an MPhil from Yale (2012), and a BA from Boston University (2009). Her research focuses on modern Judaism, American religious history, and the intersection of religion and mobility, with particular expertise in southern Jewish communities and gender studies.
Recent publications include The Jewish South: An American History (Princeton UP, 2025) and contributions to volumes like Blessings Beyond the Binary (Rutgers UP, 2024). She has presented widely, including at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Symposium and the Graduate Theological Union’s Madrasa-Midrasha Program. Rabin serves as Chair of Oberlin’s Jewish Studies Program and was recently elected Vice President of the Southern Jewish Historical Society.
Her teaching spans courses like Religious Outsiders and the American State and Jewish Conversions, reflecting her commitment to exploring marginalized religious identities. Rabin’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural issues, emphasizing the evolving role of Judaism in American society.
