Shangping Ren

Dr. Shangping Ren is a Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), since joining in 2003. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), awarded in 1997. Prior to academia, she worked as a software engineer for over five years.

Her research focuses on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Real-Time Scheduling, and Cloud Computing, with emphasis on medical CPS safety, software architecture, system reliability under resource constraints, and cloud resource optimization. She co-organized the first international workshops on CPS, which evolved into the international CPS conference. Her work is funded by NSF, Air Force Research Laboratory, and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

• Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS): Developing executable medical best practice guidance systems for emergency care, integrating physical environment assumptions into CPS design.

• Cloud Computing: Resource and VM optimization for deadline-constrained applications, energy-efficient scheduling.
• Software Engineering: Architecture design for time-critical distributed systems, reliability under resource constraints.

Recent Article Trends: Recent publications emphasize CPS applications in healthcare, real-time scheduling under performance degradation, fault-tolerant cloud scheduling, and energy-efficient algorithms. Key themes include deadline-aware resource allocation, multi-resource task assignment, and defect-tolerant NoC architectures.

Grants & Projects:

• Principal Investigator (PI) for NSF-funded projects on medical CPS (2015-2018), many-core virtualization (2010-2015), and real-time embedded systems (2008-2015).
