Shamit Saggar

Shamit Saggar is a Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at the University of Western Australia (UWA), holding dual affiliations with the UWA Business School and the School of Social Sciences. He serves as Director of the UWA Public Policy Institute and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Africa Research and Engagement Centre. His career includes roles as Visiting Professor at King’s College London and Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Essex.

Education: PhD and BA in Government from the University of Essex (1984, 1989). He has held senior academic and policy roles globally, including Directorships at the ESRC South-East Social Science Network and the Institute for Social and Economic Research. His advisory work spans government, philanthropy, and regulatory bodies like the Financial Services Authority and the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Research focuses on migration, counter-terrorism, public policy, and political participation. Key interests include Indian Ocean regional policy, national security frameworks, and the intersection of ethnicity with political representation. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to social equity and global cooperation.

Major awards include a CBE (2017) and UK Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship. He chairs and sits on boards for CEDA, The Conversation Australia, and global think-tanks. Recent projects include analyzing smaller statutory agencies and Indian Ocean regional futures, with 89+ publications across peer-reviewed journals, books, and policy reports.
