Shade Abdul is an Associate Lecturer in the BA Architecture program at Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London. He is an architect with expertise in Participatory Action Research and inclusive regeneration, focusing on addressing socio-economic inequalities and critiquing neo-liberal urban policies. His work explores the Urban Commons as an alternative to privatization and commodification of urban spaces.
Abdul holds degrees from the Canterbury School of Architecture and the Bartlett School of Architecture. He is a director of Deft.Space, an interdisciplinary practice engaged in projects such as the Canning Town estate regeneration and the Rye Lane design research initiative (funded by the London Borough of Southwark). His firm is featured in the 'New Architects 4' publication by the Architecture Foundation.
He has taught at the Brighton School of Architecture and the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. Abdul serves on the London Borough of Newham’s Design Review Panel and Urban Design London’s Environmental Design Review Panel. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
