Severin Fowles

Severin Fowles is a Professor of Anthropology and American Studies at Barnard College, serving as Chair of the Anthropology Department. His research focuses on the American Southwest's colonial histories, indigenous worlds, and material culture, with collaborations on projects involving Picuris Pueblo and Comanche Nation. He directs archaeological fieldwork examining ancestral Pueblo villages, Spanish colonial settlements, and hippie communes.

Education: PhD in Anthropology and Archaeology from the University of Michigan (2004), BA in Anthropology from Dartmouth College (1993).

Research interests include rock art, colonialism, indigenous diasporas, materiality, and environmental crises. His works explore intersections between archaeology, art, and cultural memory, with notable publications like An Archaeology of Doings (2013) and co-editing The Oxford Handbook of Southwest Archaeology (2017).

Recent publications analyze rock art counter-archives, ethnic shifting in Southwestern communities, and Comanche histories. His work emphasizes collaborative methodologies with descendant communities.
