About
Seth Adams is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell within the College of Fine Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, specializing in instrumental music education, modern band pedagogy, remote music making, and telematics. His work integrates formal and nonformal learning practices through genre-crossing musical experiences.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Music Education from Northwestern University (2024)
- M.M. in Music Education from Boston University (2012)
- B.M. in Percussion Performance and Music Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2005)
Adams' research centers on community-engaged musical practice, networked music performance, creativity-based pedagogy, and music's social bonding effects. He examines the philosophical aesthetics of music education and the lived experience of real-time network-mediated music, emphasizing how technology expands musical access while preserving aesthetic depth. His approach deliberately combines formal instruction with informal community practices.
His recent publications analyze the phenomenology of advanced networked performance and practical strategies for integrating telematics into music education. The research trend reveals growing scholarly attention to digital tools for synchronous/asynchronous music making, addressing technical challenges like latency while exploring how remote contexts reshape aesthetic encounters and pedagogical frameworks.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Modern Band Higher Education Fellowship at Music Will
Adams mentors graduate and undergraduate music education students while building partnerships with local public schools through the Modern Band program. His prior roles as a Ravinia Teaching Artist and UIC College Preparatory band director inform his community-focused teaching philosophy and outreach initiatives.
He founded the Temporal Displacement Orchestra (which premiered Frank Ticheli's "In C-Dorian" virtually in 2020) and co-founded Animal Farm, an award-winning children's music act. His professional background spans 15 years as a bassist/drummer in Boston/Chicago scenes and five years as a DCI front ensemble arranger.
