About
Prof. Sebastian F. Maehrlein is Professor for High-Field THz Physics at the Institute of Applied Physics, Technische Universität Dresden, and head of the High-Field THz-driven Phenomena Department at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). He leads an Emmy Noether group partially affiliated with the Fritz Haber Institute (Berlin).
- Physics Diploma, University of Konstanz
- Doctorate in Physics, Freie Universität Berlin (2016)
His research focuses on controlling structural dynamics in quantum materials using intense terahertz fields, exploring nonlinear THz physics, chiral phonons, and phonon angular momentum conservation. He investigates coherent lattice responses in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and rotational phonon-phonon Umklapp scattering in three-fold symmetric crystals.
Scientific awards include the Feodor Lynen Fellowship (2016–2020) and DFG Emmy Noether grant (2022–present). His work bridges ultrafast material control, angular momentum conservation in solids, and applications to spin/topological systems.
