About
Saskia van Mil is a Full Professor of Molecular and Translational Metabolism at the University Medical Center Utrecht. She serves as Director of the Center for Molecular Medicine (www.cmmutrecht.eu) and holds leadership roles in the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) as a governing board member and scientific committee participant.
She earned her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 2004, focusing on genetic disorders of pediatric cholestasis. Her postdoctoral research at Imperial College London investigated the bile salt sensor farnesoid X receptor (FXR) in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.
Her research explores molecular mechanisms of nuclear receptor FXR, its role in energy metabolism, and therapeutic potential for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and related cancers. Her group integrates molecular biology with translational approaches to improve diagnostics and therapies.
Recent publications highlight her work on lipidomics in MASLD, FXR transcription dynamics, dietary metabolism impacts, and liver organoid development. These span molecular mechanisms, translational medicine, and clinical guidelines.
Dr. van Mil has received prestigious Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) grants (Veni, Vidi, Vici) and funding from the European Commission, Dutch Digestive Disease Foundation, and DSM. She contributes to scientific advisory roles including chairing Herenboerderij Nieuw Bureveld and reviewing grants for MLDS.
