Dr. Ruth-Lovell's research primarily investigates the complex relationships between clientelism, populism, and various dimensions of representative democracy, with a regional focus on Latin America. Her work critically examines whether populist movements serve as threats or correctives to democratic systems, how clientelist practices affect social policy development, and the relationship between populism and direct democratic mechanisms.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the intersection of democratic theory and political practice in Latin America, with particular attention to how populist movements reshape democratic institutions and processes. Her research combines comparative political analysis with in-depth regional expertise.
Dr. Ruth-Lovell is actively involved in the DEMOGAMES project (Erasmus+ KA2, Strategic Partnership), which develops analog and digital game-based learning tools for youth work focused on democracy education.
She has established collaborative research relationships across European institutions and with scholars working on Latin American politics. Her methodological approach combines qualitative case studies with comparative analysis to address complex questions about political representation and democratic governance.
