Sarah Zaides Rosen is a Lecturer at the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies, University of Washington, where she also directs the graduate fellowship program and previously served as associate director from 2017-2023.
She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Washington.
Dr. Zaides specializes in Russian, Soviet, and late Ottoman history with a focus on Jewish diaspora experiences. Her research examines Jewish-Muslim relations in imperial transition periods, particularly Ashkenazi Jewish migration trajectories following the collapse ofOTTOMAN and Russian empires. She analyzes how displaced communities navigated Sephardic-majority environments in Istanbul and Aegean colonies while considering resettlement in Palestine, the Americas, and Europe.
Her 2022 monograph Tevye’s Ottoman Daughter establishes her expertise in transnational Jewish history, revealing how geopolitical ruptures reshaped identity and community formation during the early 20th century.
