Sarah Smith is a Professor of Visual Culture and Head of Research at The Glasgow School of Art. She earned her BA from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (1994), an MA from University College Dublin (1995), and a PhD from the University of Glasgow (2007).

Research Interests: Sarah's expertise lies in visual culture, focusing on artists' moving image, archival art, experimental film, and feminist art. Her work explores intersections between art and cinema, cinema as archive, and artists' documentary, with a particular emphasis on sampling in art and art and archives.
PhD Supervision: She supervises doctoral research in artists' moving image, experimental film, and feminist art. Current supervisees include Kelly Rappleye, examining colonial legacies through artists' moving image, and Rachael Kelly, constructing an audiovisual history of Irish refugees in Scotland.
Professional Affiliations: Sarah serves on the AHRC Peer Review College, Irish Research Council, and FCT (Portugal) Arts and Humanities Peer Review College. She previously contributed to the REF2021 Panel 32 (Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory).
Publications: Her research appears in Screen, Sculpture Journal, and Feminist Media Studies. Her forthcoming book, Cinema as Archive in Artists' Moving Image (Bloomsbury, August 2025), consolidates her scholarly contributions.
