Sarah Reed

Sarah Reed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut, where she has been a faculty member since 2011. She also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Animal Frontiers, the official journal of the American Society of Animal Science, European Federation of Animal Science, American Meat Science Association, and World Association for Animal Production.

Her educational background includes:

• PhD in Animal Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Florida (2009)
• MS in Animal Science from the University of Florida (2006)
• BS in Equine Science from Delaware Valley College (2003)

Dr. Reed's research centers on muscle growth and development, with specific expertise in maternal nutrition effects on offspring, exercise deconditioning/reconditioning physiology in horses, and inflammation/oxidative stress impacts on muscle. Her work integrates molecular biology techniques with applied animal science to address livestock production challenges.

Recent research outputs highlighted in UConn Today demonstrate her active program, including grants on meat quality improvement (2024) and mitochondrial health in sheep (2024), alongside influential studies on equine biomechanics (2023) and crossbred calf nutrition (2021).

She has received the University Teaching Innovation Award (2020) for her instructional excellence in courses such as Comparative Exercise Physiology and Equine Rehabilitation Seminar. Dr. Reed advises undergraduate honors theses and maintains a research laboratory in the George White Building, Room 206.
