Sarah Mountz

Dr. Sarah Mountz is Associate Professor at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. With a PhD from University of Washington and MSW from Columbia University, her research examines LGBTQ youth in child welfare, juvenile justice, and homeless systems. Her community-based participatory research (CBPR) project 'From Our Perspectives' documented experiences of LGBTQ former foster youth through qualitative interviews and photovoice methods, resulting in art installations and documentary outputs.

Research Focus: LGBTQ+ youth system involvement; Critical feminist methodologies; Anti-carceral social work; Participatory action research; Transformative pedagogy.

Methodologies: Specializes in life history interviewing, photovoice, and critical discourse analysis to explore intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and institutional pathways.

Publications: Investigate educational barriers for foster youth, anti-trans policies, and resistance strategies among incarcerated LGBTQ youth.
