Sarah Howe is a British poet, academic, and editor. She is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool and previously held roles as a Research Fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at University College London. She studied at Harvard as a Kennedy Scholar and completed a PhD on Renaissance English poetry at the University of Cambridge. As a poet, she has published critically acclaimed works like Loop of Jade (2015), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Her research and creative work explore themes of cultural hybridity, migration, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
She has been a Poetry Editor at Chatto & Windus (Penguin UK) and founded the online journal Prac Crit. Her recognitions include a Hawthornden Fellowship, the Harper-Wood Studentship, and Radcliffe Institute Fellowship. She co-founded the Ledbury Poetry Critics programme to mentor critics of colour, impacting 30 individuals. Her projects include poetic responses to scientific research (e.g., Crick Institute collaborations) and historical materials (e.g., TIDE project on cross-cultural encounters).
Award highlights include the Eric Gregory Award (2009) and being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (2018). Her work appears in journals like The Guardian, Poetry Review, and The Paris Review Daily. She actively engages in public arts through BBC Radio performances, poetry readings, and initiatives like the Odyssey Project.
