About
Sarah Hinds is a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Chester and a PhD student in the Department of History at the University of York. Her research focuses on late medieval material culture, domesticity, and methodological approaches to probate inventories. She examines how household objects, spaces, and interactions reflect social structures and cultural practices in late medieval England. Hinds advocates for innovative qualitative and narratological methods to reinterpret these administrative documents.
Her key publications include works on chests as cultural objects, narratological analysis of inventories, and reappraisal of sexual badges. She has presented at major conferences such as the Leeds International Medieval Congress and the BBC History Festival. Hinds collaborates on the Documentary Archaeology of Late Medieval Europe project, transcribing and editing English probate inventories for an international database led by Harvard University.
Her doctoral thesis, Objects, Space, and the Household in Late Medieval Probate Inventories, critiques the production and usage of inventories from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, proposing new frameworks for understanding domestic life. This research bridges material culture studies, spatial analysis, and social history, offering fresh perspectives on medieval domesticity.
