Sandeep Mohapatra is a Professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on applied econometrics, development economics, and agricultural economics, with particular emphasis on intra-household decision-making, climate shocks, and child outcomes in developing economies. Current projects include analyzing the causal impact of cultural diversity on Canadian economic outcomes and the role of hope in household welfare in rural Tanzania.
Dr. Mohapatra has received numerous teaching awards, including the Faculty Teaching Award (2019), NACTA Teaching Award (2010), and multiple Teacher of the Year recognitions (2008–2017). His work spans over 70 publications in top journals like Economic Development and Cultural Change, Energy Economics, and the Journal of Development Studies. He has supervised numerous graduate students, including advisees from India, Tanzania, Uganda, and Canada.
His research agenda integrates quantitative methods with interdisciplinary themes, addressing global challenges such as climate adaptation, gender inequality, and sustainable agricultural practices. Notable contributions include assessing methane policy in Canada’s oil sector and exploring land rights’ impact on women’s empowerment in Peru.
