Sam Wetherell

Dr. Sam Wetherell is a Senior Lecturer in the History of Britain and the World at the University of York's Department of History. His research examines twentieth-century urban history, focusing on the intersections of racial inequality, deindustrialization, environmental change, and cultural production. His first book Foundations (Princeton University Press, 2020) analyzes how Britain's built environment shaped political and social development.

Dr. Wetherell's current project The Burden of Obsolescence: Liverpool and the Un-Making of Modern Britain investigates Liverpool's post-1945 history as a case study in deindustrialization, racial politics, and urban regeneration. He studies how cultural strategies emerged as solutions to economic and environmental crises. Recent publications explore garden festivals as responses to industrial decline and racial discrimination in postwar housing policies. Dr. Wetherell teaches modules on Black British history, decolonization, and historical research methods.
