About
Sam Horowitz is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture and Area Head at Rowan University’s Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts. He holds a B.A. in Studio Arts from Bard College (2010) and an M.F.A. in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies from Alfred University (2020). His practice merges geology, philosophy, and material science to explore deep time, material agency, and interspecies relationships. Key projects include durational sculptures like The Long Now (2023), participatory installations Time Becomes Us (2020), and site-specific works addressing environmental and community themes.
Horowitz teaches courses in sculpture at Rowan and RISD Continuing Education. His pedagogy emphasizes empathy, technical skill, and material experimentation, prioritizing student autonomy in conceptual exploration. He has exhibited nationally, including solo shows at the Society for Domestic Museology (Bronx) and Point of Contact Gallery (Syracuse), with residencies at Salem Art Works and Sloss Furnaces. His work investigates rule-based aleatoric processes, material transformation, and the intersection of human and non-human temporalities.
Current research focuses on alchemical material translation, fossilization simulations, and community-driven installations. He balances fine craft with found textures, creating works that provoke reflection on ecological urgency and collective becoming. Teaching philosophy emphasizes safety, iterative practice, and fostering student confidence through hands-on material engagement.
