Sam Flynn

Sam Flynn is a Lecturer in Analysis and Popular Music at the School of Music, University of Leeds, appointed in September 2021. His work bridges music analysis, historiography, and critical race/ethnicity studies in post-war popular music.

Education:

Research Interests: Focus on rhythm evolution in African-diasporic popular musics of the Americas, including African-American styles (1950s R&B to hip hop) and Jamaican genres (ska, rocksteady, reggae). Explores how mass-culture critiques intersect with race, gender, ethnicity, and age in music historiography.

Teaching: Leads third-year undergraduate module 'Analysing Music', teaches analysis and popular music at all levels, supervises Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations, and specializes in popular/jazz performance instruction. Serves as Academic Personal Tutor for first-year students.
