Keith Brown

Keith L. Brown is an Assistant Professor of Jazz and Contemporary Piano Music at the University of Oregon's School of Music and Dance. A renowned pianist and composer, he tours globally with artists like Grammy-nominated saxophonist Kenny Garrett, blending R&B, Funk, Classical, Jazz, and Hip-Hop in his work. His academic role focuses on mentoring emerging jazz musicians while maintaining an active international performance and recording career.

• Education: Master of Music (2011) and Bachelor of Music (2009) in Jazz Studies from the University of Tennessee.

Rooted in jazz tradition but forward-looking in style, Brown’s research interests include interdisciplinary musical fusion, contemporary jazz pedagogy, and innovative compositional techniques. His recordings, such as African Ripples (Space Time Records), reflect these interests through dynamic collaborations and genre experimentation. Brown’s recent projects explore the intersection of jazz theory with modern rhythms like hip-hop and reggae.

Brown has performed at prestigious venues including Jazz en Tête Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and NorthSea Jazz Festival. His work has received critical acclaim, including four stars from Downbeat Magazine for African Ripples. As an educator, he bridges practical performance experience with academic instruction, preparing students for careers in contemporary music.

As a member of a musical family, Brown draws inspiration from his father Donald Brown (Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers) and siblings. His teaching emphasizes technical mastery, creative exploration, and honoring jazz’s cultural heritage while pushing boundaries. Brown’s current research involves documenting the evolution of jazz piano through performance-based analysis and student mentorship.
