Sam Dodd is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on modern American art and architecture, material culture, and media history. He is completing a monograph titled All Eyes on Space: Television and the Architecture of Distant Sight, examining the intersection of media, spatial design, and corporate influence in 20th-century television infrastructure. Sam holds a PhD in Architectural History and Theory from the University of Texas at Austin and has taught at the University of Arizona and Ohio University.
His publications appear in Art Journal, Journal of Design History, and Design Issues, among others. He has received research support from the Smithsonian Institution, National Endowment for the Arts, and Pennsylvania State University's Humanities Institute. At Stony Brook, he teaches modern art/architecture history, research methods, and socially engaged practices. He is affiliated with the Media, Art, Culture, Technology Graduate Certificate and the Center for Changing Systems of Power.
A first-generation scholar-teacher, Sam emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and technological histories, advocating for socially engaged academic practices.
