Stephen Decatur Smith

Stephen Decatur Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at Stony Brook University. His research focuses on twentieth-century musical modernism through an interdisciplinary lens, integrating music history with modern philosophy and other arts. He specializes in the Second Viennese School, popular music, politics, and theoretical frameworks such as psychoanalysis, phenomenology, vitalism, and Frankfurt School critical theory.

Smith has received fellowships from NYU, the U.S. Department of Education, and DAAD. He plans to teach courses on twentieth-century opera, Adorno's philosophy, and music's role in shifting cultural perceptions of humanity.
