Sally Bell

Sally Bell is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Monash University, and serves as Director of Gastroenterology at Monash Health, the largest gastroenterology service in Australia. She holds a Doctorate of Medicine in Hepatology from the University of Melbourne (2000) and an MB.BS (1989), also from the University of Melbourne. Her clinical expertise spans gastroenterology and hepatology, with a focus on managing advanced liver disease and special-needs IBD groups like pregnant women and fistula patients.

Dr. Bell’s research integrates clinical and translational medicine, emphasizing IBD and maternal health, liver cancer epidemiology, and digital healthcare transformation. She leads the Pregnancy and IBD research group (PICCOLO), defining neonatal outcomes from maternal IBD medications, and pioneered accurate liver cancer incidence measurements in Victoria. Current projects explore telehealth applications for liver cancer surveillance and digital solutions for chronic diseases like decompensated cirrhosis.

In education, she is a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Teachers (University of Melbourne, 2015-2019) and contributed to national gastroenterology training curricula. She mentored multiple FRACP candidates and founded the Mentoring for Medical Women program at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. Dr. Bell collaborates with international biotech/pharma companies and advises national specialty societies like GESA, where she previously led the gastroenterology training committee and advocated for biosimilar medications.

Her work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and education, enhancing multidisciplinary care and patient engagement through innovative clinical and digital approaches.
