S. Alexandra (Alex) Marshall is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Behavior & Health Education at the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She holds academic credentials including a Ph.D. in Health Behavior from Indiana University, an M.P.H. from UAMS (with honors), and a B.A. in Biology and Broadcast Journalism from the University of Arkansas. Dr. Marshall specializes in HIV prevention, maternal and child health, and community-engaged research using qualitative methods. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2023 UAMS Women Faculty Mentoring Award and the 2023 COPH Excellence in Teaching Award.
Her research focuses on improving HIV care access in rural settings, training public health professionals in maternal/child health, and addressing health disparities for marginalized populations. She collaborates closely with community-based organizations to design interventions targeting high-risk groups such as incarcerated individuals and transgender youth. Teaching responsibilities include courses on human sexuality research, maternal/child health, and health behavior theories.
Dr. Marshall’s recent publications emphasize barriers/facilitators to HIV care engagement, transgender healthcare in Arkansas, and telemedicine’s role in gender-affirming care. Her work bridges academic research with real-world applications, prioritizing community partnerships and policy-driven solutions.
