Ruurd Halbertsma

Ruurd Halbertsma is a Guest Researcher at Leiden University's Faculty of Humanities, affiliated with the Department of Archaeology and the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS). He also serves as a curator at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, focusing on Greek and Roman artefacts. His academic work bridges archaeology, museology, and the history of classical collections.

Education: Studied Classics, Archaeology, and Ancient History at Leiden University, completing a PhD on the archaeological travels of Colonel Jean-Emile Humbert (1771-1839), a pioneer in Mediterranean archaeology.

Research Interests: Specializes in Greek/Roman material culture, the history of European antiquities collecting, 19th-century museum development, and museological practices. Current projects examine the political dimensions of national museum collections in Europe.

Awards: Holds a Fellowship from the Society of Antiquaries of London (SAL).

Teaching: Instructs MA programs in Arts & Culture and Museum Studies, as well as the Classics BA program. Mentors PhD candidate Hendri Schut.

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with LUCAS and the Archaeological Heritage Management division.
