Ruth Maclennan is an artist and academic affiliated with Central Saint Martins at the University of the Arts London, where she holds the position of Lecturer. Her practice-based PhD in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art (RCA) explores the intersection of art and climate change. She leads the BA Moving Image course at Open College of the Arts, University of the Creative Arts, and serves as an associate lecturer at Glasgow University.
Her research investigates the ethical and practical implications of art in addressing climate change, focusing on the experiences of communities in northern Scotland and Arctic Russia. Through video installations, photographs, and interdisciplinary projects, she examines shifting relationships between humans, the environment, and history. Her acclaimed films Call of North and From Time to Time at Sea premiered at the London International Film Festival, while Theodosia gained renewed relevance following Crimea's annexation.
Maclennan's collaborative projects, such as State of Mind (uniting artists and neuroscientists) and Archway Polytechnic (a site-based initiative), highlight her commitment to cross-disciplinary engagement. Her publications include Re: The Archive, The Image and the Very Dead Sheep (2004) and Anarcadia (2015).
