About
Ruth Clifford is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Limerick, and a Consultant Haematologist at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) since 2016. Her clinical focus spans lymphoid malignancies, particularly chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), while her research integrates genomics and artificial intelligence to address genetic drivers of blood cancers and chemotherapy resistance.
- Education:
- MD from NUI Galway (2002)
- PhD in Haematology Genomics, University of Oxford (CRUK Fellowship)
Ruth's work explores genomic mechanisms in blood cancers, including the discovery of SAMHD1 mutations as biomarkers for CLL resistance. She pioneers AI-driven diagnostic pathways and leads national initiatives like the Enhanced Blood Cancer Outcomes Registry (EBCOR).
Her recent publications focus on:
- Lymphoma follow-up strategies
- Bleeding prevention in thrombocytopenic cancer patients
- Genomic risk profiling in myeloma
- Genotype-phenotype interactions in Down syndrome leukaemia
Scientific awards include the Cancer Research UK Fellowship. Ruth serves as translational co-chair of Cancer Trials Ireland's Haematology and Lymphoma DSSG and contributes to the National Cancer Control Programme's molecular advisory group.
Ruth collaborates extensively across Blood Cancer Network Ireland, ULCan's Basic Sciences Pillar, and the Limerick Digital Cancer Research Centre to advance cancer research infrastructure in Ireland.
