About
Ruth Bowness is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of St Andrews' School of Medicine within the Medical & Biological Sciences department. As an MRC research fellow, she actively supervises postgraduate research students through PhD projects focused on mathematical modeling of infectious diseases.
Her research expertise centers on developing in-host mathematical models for infectious diseases, using partial and ordinary differential equations alongside individual-based models to simulate disease progression and antibiotic treatment strategies. She maintains strong collaboration with the Mathematical Biology group in the School of Mathematics. Her current multidisciplinary work focuses on spatial modeling of tuberculosis disease progression and treatment in the lungs, aiming to simulate novel therapeutic approaches for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory toward computational modeling of complex biological systems in infectious disease contexts, spanning tuberculosis treatment mechanisms, antibiotic resistance dynamics, and viral infection modeling. Her work demonstrates exceptional interdisciplinary integration of mathematical theory with practical medical applications, contributing significantly to Sustainable Development Goals related to global health.
- Member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (2018)
Dr. Bowness has secured substantial research funding through multiple principal investigator roles, including an MRC-funded project on tuberculosis disease progression (2017-2022) and research on antibiotic resistance modeling (2018-2021). Her scholarly impact is evidenced by international recognition, media coverage, and significant academic readership across platforms like Mendeley. Her research fingerprint prominently features Infection (100%), Dynamics (75%), Diseases (57%), and Immune Response (50%) as core thematic areas.
Her dual affiliation with the School of Medicine and collaboration with the School of Mathematics exemplifies her commitment to bridging mathematical rigor with biological and medical applications, positioning her at the forefront of computational infectious disease research.
