Russell Gruen

Russell Gruen is Dean of the College of Health and Medicine at The Australian National University (ANU) and holds the title of Professor of Surgery and Public Health. He is a specialist trauma surgeon with a PhD in health services research and post-doctorate qualifications in health policy, medical ethics, and business management from Harvard University. His career includes leadership roles at Monash University (founder of the Australian National Trauma Research Institute) and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he directed the Institute for Health Technologies.

His research focuses on trauma systems, global surgery, and health system innovations, particularly in resource-limited settings. Gruen has pioneered initiatives such as the Australian Trauma Registry and led the Australia-India Grand Challenge Project for trauma system development in India. He is a Lancet Commissioner in Global Surgery and President of the Alliance for Surgery and Anaesthesia Presence (ASAP).

Key awards include NHMRC Practitioner Fellow (Australia), John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), and election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, Academy of Medicine (Singapore), and International Surgical Society. He advises organizations like WHO and co-founded the WHO Global Alliance for Care of the Injured.

Recent projects include the PATCH-Trauma trial (tranexamic acid in severe trauma) and collaborations on space medicine (microgravity physiology). His work spans over 296 publications, emphasizing trauma outcomes, biomarkers, and health policy.
