Ruby Yang is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker who joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) at the University of Hong Kong in 2013 as the Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities. She served as Interim Director of the JMSC and became the permanent Director on 1 July 2024. With a career spanning 35 years across the United States, Beijing, and Hong Kong, she is renowned for her documentary work addressing critical social issues through powerful visual storytelling.
Her creative research focuses on documentary filmmaking as a tool for social change, emphasizing humanitarian crises, public health advocacy, and journalistic integrity. She founded the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative (HKDI) in 2015 to cultivate emerging filmmakers and strengthen documentary storytelling within local communities, bridging journalism and cinematic artistry to expose underreported societal challenges.
Yang's exceptional contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards:

- Multiple Academy Award and Emmy nominations
