Roumen Dimitrov is a Senior Lecturer in Public Relations and Advertising at the School of the Arts and Media, University of New South Wales (UNSW). Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, he holds a BA (Hons) from Humboldt University of Berlin (1982) and a PhD in Sociology of the Media from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1987). His post-doctoral research at the Scientific Centre Berlin (1993-1994) furthered his expertise in comparative media studies.
His research focuses on strategic communication, nonprofit communication, and the role of silence in public relations. He has taught at institutions like Sofia University and the University of Western Sydney, and advised UNESCO and Australian government departments. His book Strategic Silence (2017) explores silence as a mainstream communication tactic. He is an editorial board member of PRism and Global Media Journal, with over 40 journal articles and book chapters to his name.
Awards earned as a journalist and writer highlight his communication skills. His teaching emphasizes experiential learning and community engagement, earning him university and national awards in Australia. He has contributed to major projects on civil society and media institutionalization, funded by the EU and Johns Hopkins University.
