Rotem Gilbert serves as Professor of Practice and Vice Dean of the Research and Scholarly Studies division at the USC Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. A native of Haifa, Israel, she is internationally recognized as a recorder and historical double reeds specialist focusing on 15th and 16th century music performance.
Her academic training includes:
- Recorder studies at Mannes College of Music
- Solo diploma from Scuola Civica di Musica of Milan (under Pedro Memelsdorff)
- Doctorate in early music performance practice from Case Western Reserve University
Professor Gilbert's scholarly work centers on historical performance practice, with emphasis on rhythmic vitality and expressive interpretation in Renaissance dance music. As founding member of the ensemble Ciaramella, she has advanced the field through critically acclaimed recordings like "Dances on Movable Ground" (awarded Editor's Choice by Early Music Today for "expressive fluidity and rhythmic vitality") and extensive international touring across the United States, Europe, and Israel.
Her distinguished honors include:
- 2012 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at USC
- 2014 Thomas Binkley Award from Early Music America (joint with Adam Gilbert) for "outstanding achievement in performance and scholarship by the director of a university or college early music ensemble"
With a 11-year tenure as Piffaro member (1996-2007) and appearances on Deutsche Grammophon’s Archiv, Naxos, and Yarlung labels, she bridges academic scholarship and professional performance. Her current leadership as Vice Dean drives research initiatives while maintaining active performance schedules with multiple ensembles.
