Ross Shachter

Ross Shachter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University's College of Engineering. He specializes in probabilistic reasoning, decision analysis, and modeling uncertain processes for applications in medical policy, meta-analysis, and intelligent systems.

• Education: BS in Management from MIT (1976), PhD in Operations Research from UC Berkeley (1982)

Research focuses: Influence diagram knowledge representation, intelligent decision systems, medical decision analysis, decision analysis fundamentals, and planning under uncertainty. His work enables humans and machines to model complex relationships involving uncertainty, decisions, and objectives through Bayesian belief networks and influence diagrams.

Ross Shachter joined Stanford's faculty immediately after completing his PhD and has contributed to foundational methods for analyzing probabilistic models. His applied research includes cancer screening process analysis (bladder, breast) and vaccination strategy modeling (HIV, Helicobacter pylori).
