About
Ross Anderson is a Senior Researcher in Natural History and Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Department of Earth Sciences, associated with All Souls College. His research focuses on early life evolution, Proterozoic geobiology, and taphonomic processes, particularly examining mechanisms of fossil preservation in ancient environments. He holds a PhD from Yale University and has been recognized with the President’s Prize of the Palaeontological Association (2017).
Anderson’s academic journey includes a bachelor’s degree from Harvard (2012), followed by master’s and doctoral studies at Yale (2014–2017), funded by a NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship. He joined All Souls College as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in 2017 and assumed his current roles in 2022 and 2024. His teaching spans undergraduate courses in Invertebrate Palaeobiology and Earth-Life Coevolution, as well as DPhil supervision in Earth Sciences.
His research lab investigates the interplay between environmental changes and biological evolution across the Proterozoic, employing novel geochemical and microscopic techniques. Key themes include the emergence of eukaryotes, multicellularity, and the drivers of the Cambrian Explosion. Recent work explores how clay minerals and microbial interactions influence fossil preservation, offering new insights into Proterozoic life.
Publications highlight Anderson’s focus on microfossil morphology, geochemical analyses of Neoproterozoic strata, and re-evaluation of taphonomic biases in fossil records. His awards reflect contributions to palaeontological methods and understanding evolutionary transitions. Anderson actively mentors students and collaborates globally, with fieldwork in regions like Svalbard, Mongolia, and Iran.
