About
Patrick Orr is an Associate Professor in the School of Earth Sciences at University College Dublin. His research focuses on palaeobiology, particularly the taphonomy of exceptionally preserved fossils, skeletal taphonomy of vertebrates, and trace fossil analysis. He has contributed to understanding fossil preservation mechanisms through experimental studies and geochemical analyses. His work bridges palaeontology with conservation efforts, examining the impact of anthropogenic environmental changes on marine ecosystems.
Education:
- BSc from Queen's University Belfast
- PhD from the University of Bristol
Research Interests:
Orr's research explores how preservation processes affect fossil records, including molecular preservation in fossils, structural coloration, and the ecological insights from trace fossils. His recent work addresses conservation palaeobiology, applying fossil data to modern environmental challenges.
Publications & Awards:
He has authored/co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on feather preservation, melanosome analysis, and trace fossil ecology. Notable awards include the Hodson Award (2001) for outstanding early-career research contributions. His work has been featured in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Palaeontology.
Teaching & Grants:
Orr coordinates modules on palaeontology, geobiology, and the history of life. He led the PRTLI 5 grant (2011–2016) supporting Earth Science PhD programs. His teaching philosophy emphasizes student engagement and cutting-edge research integration.
Labs & Professional Roles:
Affiliated with UCD’s Earth Sciences research groups, he actively participates in the Palaeontological Association, holding council membership since 2005. His interdisciplinary approach connects fossil records to contemporary ecological dynamics.
