Ron Himes is the Henry E. Hampton, Jr. Artist-in-Residence at Washington University, holding a joint appointment in the Performing Arts Department and African American studies. He founded the Saint Louis Black Repertory Company in 1976, which became a nationally recognized institution for African-American theater. Himes graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Washington University. His work spans over 100 plays, including productions of August Wilson’s works and original pieces like I Remember Harlem II.
He has received numerous accolades, including the Pierre Laclede Award and Lifetime Achievement Award, and holds honorary doctorates from University of Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University. Himes has served on advisory boards for the National Endowment for the Arts, Kennedy Center, and other arts organizations. His research and practice focus on African-American theater, cultural preservation, and community engagement.
