Rodrigo Ranero is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a dissertation focused on syntax and phonology. His research interests include cross-linguistic syntax and phonology, particularly in Mayan, Spanish, and Bantu languages, with emphasis on ellipsis, null complement anaphora, relative clauses, agreement, sibilant harmony, and syntactic ergativity. He actively contributes to language revitalization and documentation projects in Guatemala (Xinka, Kaqchikel, Tz’utujil) and California (Rumsen).
Recent work includes papers on Chuj dialectal comparison, weak crossover in Spanish relative clauses (co-authored with Greg Scontras and Masha Polinsky), and VP-ellipsis in Spanish. His research integrates formal syntactic analysis with fieldwork-based documentation.
