Robert Coale

Robert Coale is a Professor at Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 University (HDR, 2014) and affiliated with the University of Rouen Normandy's UFR Letters and Human Sciences. He holds a Doctorate in Spanish from Sorbonne University (1999). His research focuses on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Republican exile in France (1937-1975), Spanish Republicans in the liberation of France (1943-1945), and cultural history of 20th-century Spain. He has published extensively on historical memory, ego-documents, and literary prizes.

Coale taught at the University of Vincennes-St Denis (Paris 8) from 2003-2015 and previously held visiting positions in the U.S. (Jacksonville University, 2001-2003; Washington College, 2000). He is a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives board and contributed to over 20 scholarly works including book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and prefaces. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, including film discussions and museum collaborations.
