Dr. Robert A. Ryan is a Lecturer at Portland State University, where he has taught Native American Psychology courses (Values and Healing) since 2004. He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of South Dakota-Vermillion and is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Dr. Ryan has extensive experience in chemical dependency treatment programs since 1983, specializing in adolescent and adult mental health and addiction counseling. He has held licenses and certifications in mental health and addiction counseling, including master addiction counselor, licensed professional counselor, and certified alcohol and drug counselor.
His work includes consulting for the Warm Springs Tribe Counseling Center (2009–2011) and other treatment programs, serving as an expert witness in criminal justice cases, and teaching college courses on Indian mental health and chemical dependency counseling. He is also a Native American Traditional Dancer and partially retired, maintaining active involvement in academic and clinical roles.
