Rob Exterkate

Rob Exterkate is a Research Associate at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Faculty of Dentistry, within the Department of Preventive Dentistry. He is actively engaged in research related to oral biofilms, dental caries, and preventive strategies, with a strong focus on microbial ecology and novel antimicrobial agents.

His research interests include biofilm formation, Streptococcus mutans, dental caries prevention, antimicrobial peptides, and dental materials. He utilizes in vitro models to study polymicrobial biofilms and the effects of fluoride, nanoparticles, and surface modifications on caries development and inhibition.

The analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on oral microbiology and preventive dentistry, particularly in understanding the dynamics of saliva-derived biofilms and developing innovative anti-biofilm strategies. His work bridges fundamental microbiology with clinical dentistry, aiming to translate findings into effective preventive interventions.

Rob Exterkate has supervised at least two PhD theses and continues to teach through research internships. He has been involved in organizing key academic events such as Eurobiofilms 2017 and has contributed datasets to open science platforms. His collaborative network spans multiple institutions, with a focus on microbiome and cariology research.
