University of Massachusetts Chan Medical SchoolAbout
Rigel Chan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at UMass Chan Medical School, with joint appointments in NeuroNexus Institute and multiple graduate programs. His laboratory focuses on neurogenetics and CRISPR-based technologies to model neurodegenerative disorders using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and organoid systems.
Dr. Chan's educational background includes a BS in Computing and MS in Bioinformatics from National University of Singapore, followed by a PhD in Genetics & Genomics from Harvard University. His postdoctoral training combined computational and experimental approaches to neurogenetic research.
Research in the Chan Lab employs CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, single-cell transcriptomics, and high-throughput screening techniques to investigate neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative mechanisms. Current projects explore microglial dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease, viral triggers of neurodegeneration, and cell-type specific gene drivers in autism spectrum disorder. The lab develops innovative methodologies including pooled iPSC generation platforms and mosaic organoid screening systems.
Dr. Chan has established collaborative networks with researchers at Harvard, Broad Institute, and other leading institutions. His work has contributed to understanding the roles of microglia in Alzheimer's pathology and developing new approaches for neurogenetic research.
