About
Dr. Richard Mulhearn is a photographer and educator based at the University of Huddersfield, where he serves as Subject Area Lead for Visual Arts within the School of Arts and Humanities. He previously led the BA (Hons) Photography course from 2015 to 2022 and completed a practice-based PhD in 2024
Education:
- MA in Photography, London College of Communication (2012)
- PhD in Photography, University of Huddersfield (2024)
Richard’s research focuses on artistic practice, particularly the photographic paradox – how photographs destabilize their relationship to real-world events. His work explores sequential photography, embodied spectatorship, and the creation of resonant spaces through visual narratives
His recent outputs include the 2024 installation Everything Is Suspended In Movement, which investigates temporal and spatial perception in photographic sequences, and the 2018 Flood: Projected Works examining environmental themes. Earlier works like Discursive Documents (2017) and Kerb (2017) explore everyday life documentation and urban representation
Richard contributes to academic discourse through external examining roles at Falmouth University, Nottingham Trent University, University of Plymouth, and Birmingham City University
